Norman Whitfield�s record originally cut by Marvin Gaye was vetoed by Barry Gordy so too appease him they released the track by Gladys Knight & The Pips which become a big US hit. Marvin Gaye had a hit with a second release of the song and this was by covered by hundreds of artists afterwards, most notably Creedence Clearwater Revival
Original recording was by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles in July 1964.This recording was left in the can but has since been uncovered and made available on a Motown "Ultimate Rarities" collection.
