Do you think that in 1939, British politicians would have refused to admit that the Nazis invaded Poland?

No, I don't think that that would have happened. Maybe politicians (of whatever political colour) would have considered all the obvious pros and cons, and would have come to the conclusions that they did. People, generally, were more down to earth in those days, but nowadays, there seem to be more nuances, more vague definitions, around. What happened then was clear-cut, but now the situation's a bit unclear, with too many people involved.

When you are one of these high flying confident psychopathic types you do whatever it takes to push your agenda and reach your goal no matter what the cost to others. They aren't going to baulk at lying; in fact the attitude will be that if you are going to lie, make it a big one, it'll cause others to doubt themselves and you're more likely to get away with it.
