Iodine tablets only protect against radioactive iodine and nothing else. So, hardly worth the bother.

Potassium iodide (a.k.a. iodine) only protects the thyroid gland and is only really useful for those under 40 years of age:

It's worth noting that those dosages are a great deal higher than the amounts of iodine typically found in tablets purchased in pharmacies, etc.  For example, these tablets each contain 0.15 mg of iodine

so you'd need 867 of them to reach the recommended dose of 130mg.  As that's somewhat impractical, iodine that's used to counter the effects of radiation on the thyroid gland is usually given in liquid form.

You're not far wrong.  I've had the Anderson shelter cleared of all the rubbish in it, ordered a thousand toilet rolls from Amazon, dried food, and bottled water.

When I lived in Switzerland we had some come in the post.

These were for the event of an incident at a nuke power station and everyone within 30 miles range of one got the tablets (aka most of Switzerland). The cost of tablets and distribution was paid for by power companies.

Sandy - and what do you think the world be like when you emerge? Likely no power or fuel or transport. Rioting in the streets with people fighting for food, which will be past its date and/or contaminated with radio-active fallout. You're better being at ground-zero and instantly evaporated - you won't even know you're dead.
