If anyone has a slow cooker, are they worth buying and what if anything can you cook apart from casseroles or stews.?

Put slow cooker into the search cat ..there have been loads of discussions about them.If you do buy one I don't think you will regret it .

I find it really convenient - prep, bung it in and cook. One pot to wash. Time it right, and it's ready and waiting when you get in.
Last three things I cooked in it: Ribs (turned out fantastically tender), Japanese-style Mackerel (very nice - adapted from a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe in the Sunday paper), and Pea & Ham soup (not that exciting, but it filled out the corners).

Maggie - if you cook a whole chicken or a medium to large sized pork or beef roast on low all day while you are at work - you don't need to add ANY liquid at all - just sprinkle on whatever herbs and spices you want to flavor the meat - when you walk in the door it smells like you have your own personal chef!!! You can also wrap something in the heavy duty aluminum foil and cook it in the slow cooker - even less clean up that way.
Yes, they are worth buying. I wish that I`d had one years ago. As the other posters have said, they are brilliant if you are out at work, just want something cooked slowly to enhance the flavour and not dry out, want to use a cheaper cut of meat etc etc. You should get a basic recipe book with a cooker, but there are loads of books around now for slow cookers and you might be able to get one from a library to get ideas without buying.
Mine is also a Morphy Richards which I bought 'on-line' from electricshopping.com. Saved me a special journey to Argos; was delivered in three days ; and delivery was free. Total cost �33.50 which is about 40p cheaper than Argos. I've only had it a few weeks but it's proving to be excellent already. shaneystar persuaded me to buy one.
