Massively important. Lack of communication skills, either written or verbal, can and do lead to all manner of misunderstandings, frustrations and general problems that don't need to exist. Poor English skills cause inefficiency, and like it or not people will judge others on their accent, their use of vocabulary and their general politeness, so it really can't be stressed enough how important it is.

If the students aren't native English speakers then acquiring as good a command of the language as they can is vital. It will open a lot of doors for them

Chinese may be useful but I suspect the majority won't want to tackle that one. That skill is likely to be more highly paid for in future.


Depends on what the students are students of. English is useful because the Americans have spread an approximation of the language around the globe, so it can now be used for communication. That stated, tech and instant interpretation may become the norm as a rough & ready method of translation leaving less dependence on actual knowledge of languages.
