Help needed please with 1, 21a & 26a
"The chap complained at length and, from his lofty position, donated the Coek anthem to others"(2,4,4,4,3,5)
What seems to fit in is "He gave them down the banks" but it doesn't make sense to me!!!

It is frequently heard in the South of Ireland, often in a threatening sense. "If he dares to do it, he'll get down the banks, I promise him," or "I got down the banks for my pains," &c. It appears to mean a severe scolding sometimes.//
