this has been 'clued' before. anyway think of a b all game where you sometimes have to 'aim off' to get whre you want the ball to go. then lok this word up in chambers - and blimey it's a raw cadet!
There have been several clues to this given already try using the search facility

Also stuck on this one. Could it be Aintree anagram of trainee. This could be called an indirect approach !!?
BertieW I have found the clue that refers to the raw cadet so forget my last effort , although I think that mine is a better answer.! Use a handle (cue) on this and you should soon find the answer that you are looking for
Clue 79 An indirect approach is necessary for the raw cadet. (7)

An indirect approach .... so, in this game you have got into a position whereby you cannot aim at the target ball directly, maybe you have to swerve or come off a cushion.

Having got the word for this game .... look the word up at http://www.answers.com/ scroll down to the section on History and read ..... this will tell you about a belief concerning the origins of the game in India in 1875, and will answer the -raw cadet- part of the question for you.

Thanks prospector. Some answers you just don't see.
