My partner, aged 76, has been refused insurance for his car  and motorbikes on the grounds of age.Surely this is illegal ageism? Does anyone know of any insurance companies who do not behave like this? Any help is much appreciated.

Churchill renewed mine no bother. £90 quid cheaper than last year too.

But that was just for the car.

Don't be ridiculous, an insurer can choos who they insure. I have a mate of 93 that still drives, shop round.

Agree - shop around.  My daughter's MIL is 93 and still driving.

Are you 100% sure there aren't other reasons he was refused? In the Uk nearly 6 million people over the age of 70 drive and one hopes the majotiry are insured 🤔 Try Saga

what is the exact wording of the refusal?

I'm not surprised he can't get insured for a mini bus, a regular jam jar should be possible.

That throws more light if it's for a minibus. He will probably need to provide a medical report. So it's not really ageism at all, it's making sure he's safe for a higher category vehicle than a car.

A minibus isn't necessarily a higher category

Many can be driven on a standard 3.5t limit licence

yes barry but an insurance company would baulk at insuring it for some.

A car is category B and a larger vehicle like a minibus is category D1. In my book that's a higher category even if most people can drive them. It does say though you need a medical declaration to drive one over 70 (more involved than just the standard over 70 car licnece renewal).

I am 85 years old. I have car insurance with Lloyds bank, and the underwriter for my policy is Ageas Insurance Limited.
