I went in a vintage shop today and bought a old book titled famous five (I used to read the novels).

As I was buying it the shopkeeper said 'ohh famous five I remember those. She said that her mum named her brother 'Julian' after the boy in the novels. I said trying to be funny but without really thinking 'oh thats cool, at least it wasn't Dick'(another character). She went a bit quiet, said 'well yea' and walking away.

Thinking back I felt a bit ashamed but then wondered am I overthinking. I admit I am so bad with social skills

Was she called George?

Dick was a dawg.

I don't think you're overthinking, but I do think you should have thought before you spoke. It's not uncommon to say something we immediately regret, or later regret.

No, Timmy was the dog.

Ha maybe Tilly wish Id have asked that instead

I don't think that was Dick. The dog was (I think) Timmy.

Question Author

Dick was Julians brother

Timmy was the dog

Rather naive of you, and a bit lacking in tact, but I would hesitate to call it rude.   Just a joke which mis-fired.

'falling on sword'

Overthinking

I think it's quite funny, not rude at all. He walked straight into that one!

I would have laughted at that 😊

Inappropriate imho.

Have you apologised yet?
