Am I crazy to leave a posh private school job to work in a public school?

Here in the UK, so-called 'public schools' are actually the most exclusive and expensive private schools of all, such as Eton College (where 20 of our Prime Ministers have been educated). Publicly-funded schools are generally referred to as 'state schools' (even though they're not directly funded by the government).
So I'm assuming that you're transitioning between what we Brits would call 'the independent sector' and 'the state sector'. Without knowing the details of each job though, it's almost impossible offer any meaningful comment on your decision.
Here in the UK, schools in the independent sector often have smaller class sizes than those in the state sector. However tighter budgets might, for example, mean that an independent school could have ageing and poorly-equipped science labs, whereas a newly-built school on the state sector could have excellent science labs. Similarly, while independent school might have fewer discipline problems overall, there are also plenty of state schools with excellent discipline. Further, we know nothing about your workloads in the different sectors or about your salaries either.
We'll need a LOT more information in order to give you a meaningful answer! (Indeed, that might still not be possible anyway, as we'll know nothing about the potential job satisfaction offfered by each of the two posts).
