Out of 184 counties in England/Wales/Scotland only 11 have no city (I read). Is this fair? I think Shropshire should have 2 cities - Shrewsbury & Telford. What say you?

It seems to be a big thing & a cause for celebration when somewhere achieves city status -  why are some places preferred over others for no apparent good reason?

^^^ We've got far smaller cities in the UK.  St David's (Pembrokeshire) has a population of around 1,600.

My county hasn't got a city yet but we might get there eventually!

but also Bradford!

Southend-on-Sea is a dump. The place was almost certainly awarded city status solely because of the murder of its MP (who was prominent in seeking to achieve it).

I live in a city with a population of 17,657.  The villages etc takes it to 47,350.  The population is 96% white european.

It isn't an exciting city but it is a lovely place to live.

East Lothian does not have a city but Edinburgh is near at hand.

the way it used to work was if you had a church you were a village (if you didn't you were a hamlet), a market made you a town and a cathedral made you a city. The current system if you can call it that seems mostly random.

The City of London's population is about 8000.

My county doesn't have a city either and that's fine by me. I don't get the strong desire to have cities, what is it, some improvement to quality of life you suddenly acquire?

As there are only seventy-six cities in the UK, the claim is incorrect.
