Why Are These Terrorists Still Bothering?

The country they want to reunite with is run by unelected foreign bureaucrats anyway. Seems rather pointless.

Agreed. But that’s not the same as suggesting “…many people do not see EU membership as an obstacle to political independence”
The first is a matter of opinion. The second is a matter of fact.
“…do you want to have that argument or do you want to understand why some people in NI continue to desire unification with ireland?”
Neither really as neither particularly troubles me.
But the question posed is why people in N Ireland would go to the trouble they have over the years in order to see a united nation when, if they achieve their aims they will (presumably) once again become part of an EU member. The inference is that although they will gain independence from the UK, they will simply become a dependency of the EU.
Key to that question is just how “independent” EU member nations really are. Anybody believing they are politically independent is suffering a delusion, as I explained.
People on both sides of the border have craved a united Ireland since long before the EU’s predecessor was founded and long before the UK and Ireland joined the EEC in 1972. By that time “The Troubles” were well under way and the question of membership of the EEC was as irrelevant then as membership of the EU is now to that argument.
