thanks - I thought of wager and power but wasn't convinced by either of them. I thought of power play but grid fits with wager.

I quite liked 25/30. Putin does revel in Power and I was initially thinking of 'grating' as a verb, so it took me a minute to get the noun. And Wager seemed fine too - Wage, carry on (a vendetta, war etc) and R, Republican.

That's how I parsed them both - a grating and a grid are synonyms
