I think they, like Trump himself, started to realise that it's the US consumer that pays the tariffs.

I was amazed at how many people both sides of the pond didn't realise that.

When he went on TV the other day and said something like: "we are making $1bn a day" people started to realise that it was the US consumer that was paying that not Johnny forrin.

Well there is TDS at its finest again.  Shame to have to resort to "Tyrant" which he isnt or "Danger" which he isnt (or at least no more than Biden & Co) as this could be a good topic for discussion.

Still, a couple of points on tarrifs.  Firstly it needs to be remembered that tarrifs are on the import price, not the sold.  Particulaly the Chinese export at pennies so the import tarrif is diddly squat.  The end price of things like Nike trainers (for example) is mostly generated with the US, they are made inChina for peanuts using virtually slave labour and imported for very little. So the US import companies should be very able to absorb the small increase on many items.

Secondly $1Bn a day (if it is actually that which I doubt) is not very much when you take into account the sheer numbers of items imported, plue the hundreds of million of Americans being sold to.

I doubt very many truly have noticed the tarrif increase, at least not just yet anyway.

Yes but in the end the consumer pays the price. The importers have to pay the duty. Yes in China they do work for a shilling a week but it's still the end consumer that pays. I don't think Trump realised that.

I think you miss the point.

The import duty is on the price of the item at import.  So if Nike shoes are imported at 50p the taxk is on that.  End price is probably in the region of £150 so even at 100% tarrif there is only an extra 50p.  Peeing in the ocean.

Yes on cheap small things it is negligible, I get it. I see what Trump is trying to do but he seems to forget that the reason china is making things is because they do it cheaper. To reestablish the industry to make widgets in the US is a laudible aim but even if achieved they'll be subject to higher wages, taxes, US regs, Unions and the whole 9 US yards. ie the reason they went to China in the first place.

too little too late.

the american people had their chance to stop him and chose not to do it. their irresponsibility and frankly immorality are now inflicting serious consequences on the rest of the world.

do they want a clap on the back? they get off their backsides and do something to clean up the mess they have made.

Setting his thugs lose on January 6th and then pardoning them as soon as he could, shows a man with Scant regard for the law or democracy.

He's still got more than 3 years to wreck havoc.

Not all Americans supported Trump. Roughly half didn't want him. Same as roughly half of the UK didn't want Brexit, or the Tories, or Labour. Winning an election doesn't mean that the whole country thinks the same way. But winners aways crow that "the people have spoken."

I tried to make TTT's point last week; didn't get much traction though

I assume somewhere in Trump's thinking is that US companies will gear up to provide all the goods  that China can no longer sell because of the tariffs. But to match the price the Chinese were charging means the workers will have to accept Chinese-level wages.

I suspect if people had been told Making America Great Again means either prices go up and/or wages go down, they might have voted differently. But I honestly wonder if this had occurred to Trump himself?

What I can't understand is why I once supported Trump but now do not.  I've pondered whether I've changed, but I'm beginning to think that it might be him who has.

Just reading an article by Matthew Parris who opines that the Donald is going crazy, or at least is showing signs of (not so) early dementia, and his arguments about his recent edicts & opinions sound quite plausible.

Do we have a second consecutive White House incumbent who is gaga ?

I see the Parris article is available online for anyone interested;
