learning the violin

Please can any one help? My eight year old son has just started learning the violin. The problem is he is not really coming home with any clear instructions as to how I can help him. A small bit of paper, in his bag, had d r d d r d d r d r d r d written on it. However, this makes no sense to me.Can any one explain do these letters stand for doe and ray ? If so how do they correspond with the strings on the violin?

Have you contacted his teacher? As someone who worked for years at a music school, I know our faculty was always thrilled when parents wanted to help students with their lessons.
