What is the easiest way to retrieve encrypted data from a hard drive? i.e. that which is password protected?

is it encrypted, or password protected? the two are very different things.

are we talking about a particular type of file here?

Yes MP3 and MPEG4 files. Password protected.
How are they password protected? What program has been used to password protect them? By default these files cannot be password protected. They need to be inside a zip file or something to put a password on them.
