Jack Nicholson film?

I read an article in a sunday supplement magazine a few weeks back regarding a film starring Jack Nicholson. It was kind of like a road trip film and apparently Jack held the rights to this particular film and wouldn't release it. Anyone know the title??? it's meant to be a fantastic film.

Not sure if this is right but he was in Easy Rider, which was a type of road TRIP film.

I think the film you're thinking of is Easy Rider which was written by Peter Fonda & Dennis Hopper, who also starred in it

I don't understand in what context you mean release it, it's available on DVD & I have heard rumours that a remake was put on hold because of a dispute over rights but I haven't found anything online to corroborate this

About Schmidt was a bit like a road trip film, well he travelled for part of the film in a camper van when on a journey of self discovert. Its excellent but it was released and was nominated for loads of awards so i'm not sure

it was a huge flop in 1975 when it opened - as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer release. There were some critical raves, and one of the people who liked the film was Jack Nicholson who was in a position to say to the studio, well, if you don't like it, I'll buy it. And so, for over a decade, The Passenger was a Jack Nicholson property and if anyone wanted to show the film theatrically they had to get his OK. He looked after it and only recently did he sell it to Sony Classics so they can re-release it properly. And here it comes, restored and looking magical as ever - though not with any extra scenes.
