Please help me!!

Well, i'm not usually a shy person at all but i really liked this lad called Alex. He's in my psychology class and he's nearly 19 (i'm 18).
The thing is the past two relationships i've had have been quite serious, the last one i was in for 2 years! but i've never had to do the chasing, boys have always been interested in me and asked me if i want to go to the pictures or out for a drink etc.
So i just dont know how to go about asking him.
A) i dont know if he likes me in the same way
B) i dont want to be rejected then have to sit opposite him in psychology.

do you talk to him in class? if you have chance to chat then why not ask him for help with an assignment or something, even invite him for a coffee and a chance to talk about your studies.
