Independant tests have shown Spyware Doctor to be the best stand-alone product but it is not freeware.
Having said that, none of them used in isolation is foolproof.
Unlike anti-virus programmes, several can be installed on a single PC in combination and Ethel's suggestions are the accepted norm. The one I would add to the list and is probably better than any of them, is Microsofts Defender but this will only install on a PC with an OS which has passed the Genuine Advantage test.
However, be aware that installing too many can be self-defeating as they are all using the PCs resources simultaneously and can slow it down which is one of the things you are trying to avoid.
