Matthew was a 'publican', which in those days meant a tax-collector/customs-officer not a pub-owner. Simon (No.2) was a zealot, a sort of anti-Roman terrorist...a kind of suicide-bomber of the day!
That's half of them, I'll leave the remaining six - Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James (No.2), Lebbeus (surnamed Thaddeus) and Judas for someone else to sort out.
Sorry Quizmonster. I wasn't disputing your answer that Matthew was a publican. I meant to say 'the remaining disciples'.
A more interesting question is what is the name of the 12th disciple. You gave it as Thaddeus, which is what he is called in Matthew. But Mark and the Acts call the 12th Judas (and not Iscariot). How are we meant to work out the occupations if we don't know their names?
