Regrettably (and I mean that, as I'm a massive fan), I didn't think much of last night's episode. Of course, being The Royle Family, there was some truly golden stuff, but the whole thing seemed to be much more overtly emotionally manipulative and sentimental than usual. I got a lump in the throat when Nan said she loved Barbara, for example, as it was...organic (for want of a better word), and unexpected in view of what had gone before, but even then they dragged on the scene for a bit too long. To me, the whole brilliance of the programme is in its distilling and putting into focus the emotions that underpin everyday interaction/ relationships between family and friends without banging you about the head with it.
I am, however, clearly in a minority on this one! In view of the heights it has reached before, I'll let Aherene & Cash off...
