I'm not keen on these subsections either. Have you noticed questions in sub categories get fewer answers than the ones in the main category?
I'm not sure why you did it, but actually flicking through a category to see if anything was interesting didn't take that long. And let's face it, people come on here with time to spare..
On a completely different issue: how about setting up so everyone can see some key info about the replier? For example, member since, number of replies, categories frequented. And if they're based overseas. We have a few Americans using this site at the moment and the advice they are giving is really not relevant to the UK.

I'm sure the Ed is well aware & will decide what's best for the site in the long run!
Also, on the subject of 'Country of Origins' - I've requested this a few imes before, here's just one of them:

Read your link smudge, and unlike you have only been on here since August. The register details actually ask for your country of origin, which is rather ambiguous if it relates to where you are residing. I was born in England, but could now be living anywhere else in the world, so to say "country of origin" if they are asking for your location should be rephrased !! lol. Perhaps "country of residence" would be more appropriate.
I agree antiguru it can be quite misleading for some especially in Food & Drink....Graham crackers / Digestive Biscuits, Chips / crisps, Biscuits / Scones to name but a few differences between USA and Britain!!!

Love the name Pie & Mash - We used to go to the Pie & Mash shop every Saturday when we lived in Essex - it was sooo yummy. I'm sadly going off meat these days, so would just enjoy the pastry, mash & liquor (parsley sauce for anyone who's never had the good fortune to enjoy it)!
Getting back to Country of Origin - I meant the 'Country from where you are posting' - for the reasons given in that link!
Even 'Country of residence' might not be right, as people might be in transit along with their laptops, lol. However, I shall rephrase it to: 'Country of Posting'! How will that do?
P.S. Happy Halloween!

Well as long as we don't get any globetrotters on here otherwise we/they might get confused where they are posting from if the thread is open for a couple of days lol !!
Happy 4th anniversary, btw

Proof that for some ABers categories remain irrelevant and are just layers to be waded through or ignored:
