Trick or Treating

I know its more of an American tradition but is anyone doing it or taking kids to do it tonight?

Me and my best mate are taking her 2 little boys trick or treating and we have roped my sister and our mate into coming but we are all dressing up! I think now we are doing it more for ourselves than the kids! Me, my sis and my mate all went as witched to a Halloween party on Saturday so we are going as witches again tonight! Great fun!

I'm not going but my kids are.

I've just bought some brussel sprouts to dip in chocolate for when they come knocking tonight.

Hi there Rubyrose, yes we are going with my kids and another family. I do find a lot of resistance to hallowe'en and it is odd because not everybody has to get involved.
In our village there are a lot of Americans from the base and they deck out their homes like you wouldn't believe.
They even sit out on deckchairs, adults all dressed up with a can of beer, just waiting for the kids to come over and see the decorations.
The fact that we don't have to knock on doors, not knowing if the residents are happy or not about it all (their doors are normally open) and the kids clear up on hershey bars and tootsie rolls means it is all worth the effort.

I have done the house up in spiders webs,pumpkins,dangly skeletons,balloons etc whilst my son is at school,as a surprise for him when he gets in.Later he is going trick or treating with 2 little boys in our road and their mum,whilst I have buckets of goodies on standby at the front door!

Beginners guide to trick or treating

If they dont give you sweets (preferably money) you should

a) Vandalise vehicles outside property
b) Smash windows with bricks
c) C**p on the doortep

I hope no-one does anything bad to us! We are going with a 3yr old and a 4 yrs old! But I do want to get some silly string incase someone says 'trick'!

Halloween is ridiculous. If I got silly stringed I'd be up on an assault charge. Do not teach your kids such stupid ways.

If any of the little b*ggers come round our place tonight they'll get more than they bargained for!! Bah humbug!!

But then we are well off the beaten track down a dark lane so, hopefully, we wont get the little brats banging on the door!!

I wasn't actually thinking of Silly stringing the people.... just their doors or perhaps cars! But if someone is stupid enough to say 'trick' then they are going to get silly stringed... all is fair! I don't find trick or treating a 'stupid way'.. I only went a handful of times when I was a kid but my mates kids want to do it and why shouldn't they?

I'm tagging along with my sister and her husband who are musicians and a six kids ranging from 13 down to my 14th month old. We go to the Old Folks home to entertain them for a while and then visit two of my aunts. Its a bit of fun and the Old Folk especially love it. I'm dressing up as Indiana Jones - only because there's a hat in the house that looks the part!!

My mother always encouraged dressing up and partying on Halloween (mostly 'cos it's my birthday on 30th - two birds with one stone!!). So I'll be doing the same for my little daughter

If you think intimidating people in their homes and scrounging for sweets is a right then go ahead. And anyway, silly stringing my door, car or any of my property would get a pretty nasty reaction so just as well I live in the back of beyond and am unlikely to be troubled by any trick or treaters!!

Not only do I think it is wrong but it is also dangerous. You are encouraging children to beg from people they dont know. They could be anyone.. I remember a story many years back when a group of children was taken to hospital becuase the candy they were given was poisoned. It is a strange holiday and you should avoid going to houses where you are not 100% sure of the people who live there. If you really have to go, just go to friends houses..

This time of the year I would love to be living in America, how do you celebrate halloween, I do; maybe I am a witch, I do not agree with the knocking on doors and begging but the whole excitement of it, I also believe in Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny!!!!!!!!!!and now my kids are at the age of the tooth fairy.

Did anyone else's parents brainwash them as a kid.

I know that there are some people who believe that Halloween is evil or satanist in nature, but like Shandril2 already pointed out, the Halloween as WE know it now, originates in a Christian custom.

Said Christian custom does go back further to pre-Christian believes. I would hardly call the pre-Christian world evil simply for not having known Christianity - they simply had different practices. In the pre-Christian celebration at the time, they would light fires to chase away the 'evil spirits' of winter. Imagine living at that time - when it was winter, you didn't have the choice to turn on the lights or turn up the heat. It was a pretty scary time.

And a LOT of Christian practices were taken over from those old believes. Easter eggs and Christmas trees, anyone?

I just think it's wrong to condemn something without having actually tried to make an effort to understand where it comes from. We don't need more ignorance in the world, and it's not like doing research is hard in this day and age, so there's no excuse

I personally love halloween and have decked out my kitchen and tonight have been to a lovely organised party where the children had fancy dress party, discom made broomsticks out of willow, made spiders, masks, decorated biscuits, pumpkin carving, witches grotto, it was fab, .......but I do feel that knocking on peoples doors is a form of begging. its horrible. I was never allowed to do it as a child but yet I still have great memories of halloween and all the fun stuff we did....I think also it is too damn dangerous to randomly knock on peoples doors...for give me if is ound boring...just my feelings on that one ....

Oh my god! Some people on here need to pull their heads out of their own @rses as its clouding their visions!

1 - I am not letting 'MY' children knock on peoples doors as its my best mates kids but I would let MY children do it..

2 - They were NOT alone as me, my mate, my sister and our male friend came with us.

3 - I would hardly call a 3yr old dressed as a pumkin and a 4yr old dressed as Spiderman 'Scary'! Yes me and my mate were dressed as witches but thats not enough to give someone a heart attack!

4 - Begging it is not... Hence 'Trick OR treat'? Its a question. They can choose or refuse. We went last night and the kids had a great time. The kids asked 'trick or treat' and most people gave them treats, and the people who didn't want to participate didn't open their doors. Mostly people were impressed and said the kids looked so cute.

5 - We weren't in the middle of nowhere knocking on strangers doors... we did all the houses in my road and the joining road... mostly people I have known for the whole 18yrs of me living there!!!
