How do squirrels find their nuts again, once they have hid them? Is it by smell or memory?

But seriously, the use of smell will be very improtant, also the use of landmarks, or perhaps least likely, relying on a good memory.
However, it is now thought that they hide so many nuts without the intention of finding them again, instead to attempt to grow more trees. Quite clever for a Squirrel really.
