Why the square with the red cross in it?

For some reason if I go into a site with pictures in it,(not all sites); all I get is a frame the size of the absent picture with a square with a red cross in it, in the top left had corner. This seemsto be happening more and more, I cant remember having so many. all security is up to date and run daily, and all temp files removed daily too. any ideas please? I run windows XP SP2. Just check you have the following set.
If you are using IE then select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced.
Scroll down to the multimedia section and ensure Show Pictures is selected.

I've come across the same problem on several PCs (both my own and other people's, running everything from Windows 95 to XP and from IE4 to IE7). I've tried all sorts of fixes but the only thing that has ever worked for me has been re-installing Internet Explorer (or, in some cases, Windows).
Since I've switched to Firefox, I've never had this problem (and I don't know of any other Firefox users who've ever had it either). If you don't want to re-install Internet Explorer or Windows, Firefox might be your simplest solution:
