I read the stuff on kempie's link(lots of it!)and i always thought it was 'aggry'-a type of ancient bead but there is some debate as to whether it can be counted or not cos its not an English language word.

Don't have time to read all thru the links, so I don't know if the answer is given, but this is basically just a play on words and how we intepret them. The original question would have said something along the lines of "There are three words in the Enlish language", and would have been written in such a way to make you think that there are 3 words ending "gry". In fact, it is very ambiguous, and the question is more of a statement that the phrase "the English language" consists of three words, the rest is just to confuse you.
