Right.... Lets have a look at The Follower first.
What are your first impressions of this poem? (don't think too hard, just write words down)
Is it a positive poem?
When you imagine Heaney's father, what picture do you get in your head?
Do you think Heaney is proud of his father?
What is the last line of this poem telling you?
Now we go to Digging.
Again.... what are your first impressions of the poem?
How do you think Heaney feels about his father?
Do you think Heaney thinks his father is proud of him?
What do you think Heaney is using his pen to dig for?
I know I sound like I'm asking you more questions but the information you're looking for is in both poems, you just need to begin extracting it. If you can answer these questions even at a base level then you have begun to extract and understand the poems.
If it'll be useful to you, you can put the answes you come up with on here and if you need it I'll help you arrange your ideas and see if you can come to a conclusion. Good luck.
