Carrots originated in Afghanistan and were indeed purple. I don't know whether they still have the purple ones out there, but I see no reason why not! I can only guess that the colour was changed genetically, although we eat beetroot, so I can't see why purple's so bad!
It was not until the 17th Century that they turned orange, when patriotic Dutch growers favoured the colour - as used on the national flag.
Purple carrots are still out there (here) several seed companies provide the seeds.
