Cost of connecting a main gas supply to a house?
4 Answers
I am considering buying a property that as yet is not connected to main main gas supply. I know that there is a gas main in the street and that one or two other houses in the street have gas connected.
I have tried to get an estimate of how much it would cost to route a gas supply to a box and then of course the final connection to a house.
Although I have supplied the postal address to Brit Gas and their installers they will not give me any idea of possible price because I am not the owner.
The distance from main to house is probably 15 metres max.
Can anybody give me a sort of ball park 'figure' of costing for the connection.
Most grateful if you can.

This means another waiting time, but I don't have any ideas on that. I was told as well that they don't have to dig up your garden as it's done by a mole thing. hope this bit of info helps !
I used to work in the domestic gas supplies department. At that time 2002-3, as long as your property was within 20 meters public land and 20 meters private land (40 meters approx from the supply line, usually the middle of the road), you would be looking at a connection charge of approximately 260 -350 pounds. The reason you have come againt some 'reluctance' to provide a quote is as follows: if you are not the property owner and BG provide you with a standard installation cost (as noted above) and it transpires that the nearest supply is unable to take another customer, Transco the gas network company would be required to go back to the main (which , which can literally cost thousands, depending on the distance involved). BG are covering themselves, just in case you purchase the property based on their standard installation cost and it turns out to be more. In truth, the majority of customers used to pay the fee mentioned above, but I did see some corkers. My advice to you, is to get the current owner of the property you wish to buy, to contact Transco directly (therefore cutting out the middle man - its cheaper) and ask them for a quote before you buy / put in an offer. Hope this helps.
