Problem with Word

My computer has suddenly developed a problem when I try to open Microsoft Word, where the program tries to open but all I get is the Windows logo (I'm using ME). If i press Ctrl/Alt/Delete I get the message that my system is low on resources and I have to turn the computer off to go any further. I have tried uninstalling, defragginig and reinstalling but to no avail. I have not added any programs and have about 2GB free hard drive. Excel and powerpoint are working OK. Any clues?

Thanks for that info. I've tracked the problem down to a corrupted "Normal" template and everything's working ok now.
