Hi Maxie,
Sounds a good move to me.
I passed my Cemap exams a few years ago now and know that they will be quite challenging to anybody with no industry experience to speak of.
If you go to www.ifslearning.com, you will find a lot of info there, including how to sign up for Cemap exams and get the relevant paperwork.
My advice would be to take Cemap one and see how you get on with it. If you pass and still like the idea of the industry, THEN see a local IFA firm and see what they may be able to offer you - you will have already shown commitment in passing the first exam and they may well sponsor you to do the remainder and give you some training.
My firm is based in Watford, so too far for you, but if you were local we would support you in your aims. Many others will too, im sure of it.
Very best of luck to you
