hi i am a 20 year old female, and dont have a clue about cars. so plz dont laugh at my question
some one from work picks me up every morning and drops me off every night from work because i dont drive. the journey is roughly 20 miles...how much should i be giving him for petrol per week, because he said we should split it in half?????

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.10p per mile is a very rough guide figure. (If I put �20 of petrol into the tank of my 1.3 litre car, I know that it will take me about 200 miles).
If the journey is about 20 miles each way, that means that you each need to pay about �2 per day. That makes your contribution about a tenner per week.

Just to add. If he takes fair pay for the journey he is in theory operating as a taxi, therefore, you should only have to pay a contribution. If he is doing the journey anyway then its a bit cheeky wanting to go 50/50! Will he be taking you when he has annual leave or is not going to work for say sickness? No of course he wont.

If the person is asking for half of the costs, then this is fair and square. You are getting off lightly.
Technically speaking he is breaking the law by asking you to contribute to his costs, I am sure that there is a clause in his insurance policy that prohibits him for charging for a lift. However, laws are made to be broken and you can legally make a monetry gift to him each week or month.
Think of how convenient this lift is and if you had to make your own way to work, how much would it cost and how inconvenient would it be to you.

CSG2306 is wrong about the insurance situation. You need special insurance cover (and probably a taxi or private hire licence) if your car is used 'for hire or reward'. However, sharing the costs of travel does not constitute 'hire or reward', so it's perfectly legal.
As I indicated in my previous post, a half-share of weekly costs might only amount to about a tenner if the car has a small engine and it's driven by someone who has economy in mind. However, a more powerful car (or less economical driving) could take that half-share nearer to �15. That figure is also around (or possibly slightly less than) a half of what most rail operators would charge you for a week's travel over the same distance.
That means that LouLou13, Andy Boz, RugeleyBoy, FunkyMoped and I all seem to agree that an offer of �15 would be reasonable.

I don't see why people think 50/50 on fuel is so unfair - I mean he has to pay for wear and tear/ MOT/ TAX\servicing etc additional to petrol. Which if you had your own car you would be paying for. So its not actually costing you 50% of running a car but your getting the luxury of being picked up and dropped off as you would do with your own car. If you get a taxi running costs are built into the fare and would cost you more - and it's got to be better than waiting for a bus esp this time of yr. I think the people with the cheek are the ones who think the person giving the lift should be subsidizing them 'as they are going to work anyway'. It would be a bit like your neighbour bringing round their washing ang getting you to put it in your machine as you are doing a load anyway. I'm afraid if someone didn't offer me half they could find another means of getting to work.
Actually he is not breaking any laws as he is asking for a contribution to the fuel and not the hire or use of his vehicle.
Honda civics type R's are 2.0l so if he is going out of his way I think half is fair, but if he is not I think this a little steep as if he wasnt picking you up he would be going that way any way. How much is he charging you?
