dirty bricks of inglnook fireplace

i have an inglnook fireplace and the stone bricks are old and very dirty , has anyone any tips on how i can clean them without useing any acid based products.

A steam cleaner may be your best bet, you could try it on a small area first to see the effect.

Get yourself a good quality wire brush and give it a go with that, you can get really cheap wire brushes at B&Q but they are cheap for a reason, they are crap, so get a few of them, they don't last long, a pair of goggles is essential, you will get loads of crap in your eyes if you don't!!
