calculating ground area

can anybody tell me how i calculate the ground area with the following measurements to give me the ground area in square metres,
length 2.4 metres x 1.25 metres do i multiply these figures together which gives me 3 square metres?

This answer is not completely right. Although the answer 3 is right mathematically you would not be able to fit 3 patches of 1 metre x1 metre into the area available.
Careful use of a pair of scissors would help.
