Why are the cut up strips of bread dipped into a boiled egg called "soldiers"?

I always thought it was because you line the toast/bread up like soldiers on your plate???
I thought that when you dipped them into the egg yolk the yolk looked like the hats the Irish Guards wear, the ones with the big black furry hats and the red jackets outside Buckingham Palace (obviously not the same colour!!!)
Oh yes, and you lined them up like B00 said.
In my head its linked with Humpty Dumpty e.g all the king's horses and all the kings men.
The earliest recorded use of 'soldier' in this sense was actually to a piece of fried bread dipped in soup rather than toasted bread dipped in an egg. In both cases, however, the soldierly idea is contained in the rigid, stand-up-straight aspect of the bread.
And the Welsh Guard's with those buzzbie's on Warpig!..lol And the Scots Guard's:-)))
