Statutory Leave

If somone were to be booked off work due to stress for 3 weeks - is it permittable to automatically deduct pay from one's salary for this time off work?
Having been given no indication this would happen, it's come as a shock & surely there is a certain amount of days for unpaid leave in these circumstances...but not for the entire 3 weeks?

My company does not pay any sick pay but you are elligible to statuary sick pay, which is a meagre amount, paid to you by the benefits agency. The benefits agency is in your local 'phone book, if you don't mind the wait. Good luck
