If I could just add that this joining of alanine molecules in this manner is a an example of a Condensation Reaction (formely known as a Dehydration Reaction).

The amine group of one amino acid is joined to the carboxyl group of the next amino acid with the removal of one water molecule. The bond is a specific type of covalent bond called a peptide bond.
