Working on Christmas Day!.............

Is anyone unfortunate in having to work on Christmas day, I will be as I work in a 24 hour motorway service station, and I bet it will be dead quiet too. X X X :-)

I used to be a home help and worked christmas day for about three hours 4-7 pm , i didnt mind though cos they either had no family or their families were too "busy" !!! they looked forward to see a familiar face to chat to for 15- 30 minutes, it was sad leaving them alone again though.

Yes, my partner is working from 2-8 on Christmas day, poor thing! Mind you, he loves his work and I will be joining him for a short while afterwards. He is a metal artist, (was a Pest Control Officer for many years) but also now works in a residential home for the elderly. I take my little Shih-Tzu there regularly as entertainment for the residents, so on Christmas day he will be wearing a Christmas bandana and perhaps some antlers when we go to pick my darling man up from work. My grandchildren and children will be over around 9pm I think, so it will all work out fine for us.

I've worked in pubs on Christmas Day and the atmosphere is usually great.

However, not everyone is automatically in a good mood. One year I was working in a pub run by two brothers. They were opening at 1200, so I asked what time they wanted me to go in. "We won't need you before 12, so don't come in till we open", was the reply.

I got to the pub at 1145 and realised that there was a lot of work to do because the pub hadn't been cleaned after the Christmas Eve revelries. I immediately set to work to start clearing up. Brother No 1 came past and I wished him a merry Christmas. He returned the greeting. A few minutes later, Brother No.2 appeared. I also wished him a merry Christmas. His reply was slightly different: "F*** merry f***ing Christmas. In the f***ing so called spirit of f***ing bl**dy f***ing Chrismas, why couldn't you f***ing get here f***ing earlier and give us a f***ing hand?" That was the start of his tirade which continued every time he passed me for the next 4 hours!! (I wasn't even getting paid any extra. I'd agreed to work for 'standard pay' because they were hard up!).

I don't work Christmas day anymore, but I used to. But I am responsible for our duty rota for 25 staff and I'm currently doing the Christmas & New year as we speak while browsing answerbank. It's a hard task every year, but generally everyone gets to work only 1 of the shifts that people consider naff. And I do deals with the people who work the worst i.e lates christmas, nights new year. I never put the finished article out with any surprises, so generally people arn't disappointed and get what they asked for. if I can't manage it, I'll always discuss it first. This year it's looking good! yippee! I hope you have a good shift, and lot's of fun people end up stranded in your service station for a party.

Blimey "Chris" I would have walked out that was outrageous treatment you recieved, what an ungrateful boss, at least I will be getting paid 2 and half times my hourly rate, I'm moaning that I'm having to work but I have a lovely superviser and work mate and I'm sure that we will be having a good laugh on the day. Hi curiosity, There are 3 shift system at our service station, I do the days which rotate every four days eg... 4 days earlies 7-3 then 2 days off then 4 days lates 3-11 then 2 days off and so on. We have permanent night staff from 11-7. my shift will be lates, I have 27and28 off, there will be a year where my days off will fall on Christmas day. I hope we do have some stranded customer's that day and we can all have good old sing song ect. X X X :-)

we have a system of a self rota, I put out blank duty sheets about 2 month in advance and people put in their shifts, knowing what we need to cover the shifts, and it generally works, people can star up to 5 shifts a month for priority requests or negotiate swaps, morale around the rota seems good, I usually have to change about 4 of the shifts put in by the 25 people, so not bad.

Christmas day, 4pm, 3 years ago I had an alarm call for the bank I worked in. Had to get my brother to drive me 'cos I'd had a few drinks. We drank coffee and ate the leftover "roses" with the local police officer until the maintenance men arrived. We got home, eventually, and ate Christmas dinner at 9pm - with the whole family full of wine and christmas cheer. My partner's first Christmas with my family - and I abandoned him with the loonies. Won't forget that day in a hurry and will never take bank keys over the holidays again!!

Anyone taking advantage of those required to provide services on a holiday should be reminded that these are triple tip (gratuity) days.

I too work in a service station and worked christmas day last year, you will be surprised how many people want to come in and buy batteries, cigs and........sweets. obviously things they have forgot to buy before the big day. we even had a man asking for a carwash but after explaining that the inlaws were calling over i had to laugh.

i work a 12hr shift system running a sewage treatment works, so bear in mind me and the boys when you are all eating ya brussels!!!!!
