paint ?

a friend has just taken over a pub and it is in need of decorating ! can any one tell me if there is a paint that you can apply on top of a nicotine stained ceiling as this would save a lot of hard work

You need to paint it with a stainblock that will seal in tar based stains. I would use B.I.N. primer which works over smoked out buildings and chimney breasts. There are other makes but they need to be either oil based or shallac based.

Most pubs spend a fortune on painting on a nicotine effect wash though so the place looks more lived in!! Sort a shabby chic!!

Oh! you will have to paint a topcoat or two over that of course!

If you're going to try & clean it first, the thing to use is sugar soap, tried & tested on extreme nicotine! Good luck.
