broken screen

my laptop screen is broken and i am trying to connect my laptop to my desktop screen. it works while windows is loading then the desk top screen goes on standby and the laptop scteen goes on and tries to display the picture! Any ideas how to get it to work because i really need 2 get my coursework off it!!

To switch between laptop screen and external monitor usually requires you to hold down the function (fn) key and the key to switch between the two displays, this is usually on the top row, just below the screen.
