is it illegal to subcontract for a company that has different plates than you if you are a taxi driver.

It's impossible to answer the question without knowing whee you are in the country as most counties and towns in fact have different laws regarding private hire and taxis.

It would be best to ring the licensing dept of oyur local council and enquire with them.
