Good read

I'm a teacher and need a good book to read with my class of 8 year olds. Can anyone think of one that is about travel or holidays? It has to be a good read cos I'll get bored if it's not!

When I was at school my teacher read us 'The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse' and I was enthralled! There's loads of travel in it as the story is about a toy horse that, when it's toymaker falls on hard times, goes out into the world to make it's fortune.

Any Famous Five or Secret Seven adventure worked for me at 8! You might have to watch out for some of the out-dated terminology now, though.

how about jules verne "two years vacation" (not sure if thats the english title). something like "Lord of the flies" light, e.i. no dark symbolism. so maybe more like robinson crusoe, after all. I really enjoyed it at that age.

You could try a book called "Two Weeks with the queen". It's about a little boy who lives in Australia and has to go to Britain and live with his boring aunt and uncle because his brother is terminally ill with lukemia. Sounds heavy, but it is quite a funny book and gets them to think! (Bit of Citizenship thrown in for good measure too!)

in the late 70's, early 80's there was a series of books called 'choose your own adventure' there was 100's of titles to choose from. as schoolkids we loved them as our teacher used to let the class vote as to which way the story went ( you get a choice after each chapter) you will find them on ebay and the cost pennies now.

Any of the gerald Durrell books and I particularly loved The Woolpack by Cynthia Harnett, which is an historical novel and involves a journey from Burford to Southampton via winchester and newbury looking for a thieving woolmerchant.

A Series Of Unexpected Events Can't remember the name of the author, but there are amazing books, i promise!

There is a series that is sort of stupid but funny. They're called Wayside Stories from Wayside School. There is also Wayside School is getting Stranger (I'm not sure if that is what it's called) and Wayside School is Falling Down. They are really funny books, but I don't know if you'd get bored. Or you could read Harry Potter.
