putting songs on an ipod

Hi all, i am looking at getting an ipod nano for christmas but are concerned as to how to put songs onto it. My question is can songs be put onto it the same way as you do with any other mps player using songs off my computer or do i have to subscribe to the itunes site and put there official songs on it. many thanks in anticipation

songs on your pc should be fine

You won't be able to simply copy the music across, like on some mp3 players. If you use iTunes software, when you plug in your iPod it should automatically copy the music for you.
