Diesel Prices

I was hoping for a clear and concise answer to the question of why deisel fuel tends to be more expensive these days. When I was younger it always seemed to be at least 5 pence a litre cheaper than unleaded; I was led to believe that because it was easier to refine it was cheaper. Does anyone know why it's become dearer? I'm hoping the answer is not to create more profit from the growing number of diesel powered vehicles currently available.

I believe that unleaded petrol is subsidised or taxed less due to it being better for the environment. Hence, diesel and 4* are both more expensive.

also the government probably spotted that more and more people are choosing the diesel route(myself included) so seized the chance to make more money - price per litre may have gone up but we still get far better consumption !

The official reason is.. Unleaded is taxed less due to it being better for the environment. Which of course means that the REAL reason is.. Diesel is taxed more to create more profit from the growing number of diesel powered vehicles currently available.

Thanks you lot. Thing is I was once told from a reliable source (a Physics professor) that despite the noxious fumes Deisel produces, it's actually less harmful to the environment. Hmmmmm......clearly more research is required.
