I have just come up with ARTHUR for no 4, RAT mixed up could be ART with HUR as in Ben Hur, Arthur being the spillers cat that ate his food from the can with his paw. Does anyone else agree with me.

Looks like a mistake in the question as 'the deserter returns' does NOT give ART! Is there an animal called Tarhur...?! You're probably right though.
