What type?

On the front of my DVD recorder it says, in small print, 'DVD-R/DVD-W/DVD-RW/DVD+RW Recording' - does this mean it is compatable with all types of disc, and if so what are the best type for general recording and re-recording?

this means your recorder, is compatable with,
plus or minus format for recording or play back.
( dvd r record once dvd rw record over again.

Your list looks slightly wrong, or you have written it down wrong. You have DVD-W which is not a format.

Anyway the five formats are:

DVD -R (minus R)

DVD +R (plus R)

DVD -RW (minus RW)

DVD +RW (plus RW)

There is also a DVD RAM format which does have some advantages but has never caught on.

You can only re-record on a RW (plus or minus).

Once an R has been recorded you can add more till it is full, but not overwrite what is there.

You can finalize a +R or -R DVD and once that has been done nothing can be added to it.

I tend to use -R but others may have their favorite.
