slow downloads

when i try and download from bitlord, they are reilly slow, just had windows xp pro reinstalled, and eversince then its slow, also moved back home from uni were i was gettin over 200kbs, now back home i can only manage 16, could be my home brordband, thats 1 meg dont know what it is at uni as its a nabours tha any idears

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I dont think your PC spec has anything to do with your download speed, I think it is more of an available bandwidth problem.If you are downloading a popular file you are most likely to get lower speeds because the people you are downloading from only have so much bandwidth available.Download speeds are also affected if you are downloading at peak times.I have been using Bit Lord for about 3 years now and my download speeds have varied from virtually nothing, right up to 800kbs, and I have a 10 meg cable broadband.Go to the following website and run a speedtest, but the results you get can also be affected at peak times.

1) not all torrents give good speeds. to test what your line is more capable of, try downloading the openoffice torrent from their website and downloading that.
2) your uni network will, if anything like mine, totally fly compared with your home network. This is especially true of bittorrent: the protocol gives more download bandwidth to those people who also upload more, and the uni network probably has a much greater upload speed than your home connection.
3) make sure you're using good settings for bitlord. I've never used it, and use azureus instead. but if you can control such features, try these:

just luck of the draw really. I had 150k on one file the other morning before work, then after work it was only getting about 6k!

Is you're uni connection on campus or in rented house? campus connections (as far as I remember) vary wildly depending on time of use. During the day I remember it being painfully slow, but at night could manage incredible speeds because the bandwidth was shared between the campus.
