Was thinking of just putting some washing up liquid on the plates, and setting the machine on with no powder in it - surely that would work?

there's nothing wrong with that if your machine is in the middle of your garden about 50 yards from your house !!
Washing up liquid has foaming agents which bubble up like no tomorrow, in a dish washing machine there is lots of water action from two spinning high pressure arms, which help it to clean by attrition. The dishwasher powder is very gritty for this reason and contains no foaming agents whatsoever - it would be complete madness to put Fairy Liquid into your dishwasher !!

A revolutionary idea -
hot water in sink, add washing up liquid, and have a go with a dishcloth.
:)
Seriously, you should not put washing up liquid in the dishwasher - it will not rinse off the plates properly, you will be surrounding by suds and it doesn't have the right enzymes to keep your dishwasher working.
