How does the magstripe work with non-credit card transactions?

The magnetic stripe carries several lines of information ie: account/sort code numbers, date of expiry, name of account holder and any other relevant details. By swiping the card this data is input electronically or alternatively the data can be read straight from the card and input manually. Is this any help?
