We have a open gas fire which lights blocks that look like coal. The pilot is lit by a knob under the fire. This appears to work fine but, when I turn the fire off with the knob it is red hot and I have to use an oven glove. I am sure this is not right, can anybody advise please.

You may habe a faulty gas valve and could be very dangerous i suggest you keep it turned off untill you can have it checked for safety by a CORGI engineer.
